The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have issued a joint warning highlighting the persistent threat of asbestos contamination in imported consumer goods. Despite decades of regulatory restrictions, asbestos continues to be detected in textiles, brake components, building materials, and household products entering UK markets.
The coordinated enforcement action underscores the need for sustained vigilance across occupational, environmental, and consumer product pathways. Regulatory agencies are urging both retailers and consumers to implement robust verification procedures, including requesting certified safety documentation and ensuring compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 before purchase and use.
This multi-agency response reflects the recognition that asbestos exposure remains a significant public health priority, with no established safe exposure threshold and documented risks of mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis following latency periods of 10–50 years.
