Current surgical margin assessment in osteosarcoma faces significant limitations, with local recurrence rates between 15-20 percent despite ongoing refinements in technique. A newly developed integrated PET imaging platform directly addresses this clinical challenge by providing real-time surgical margin assessment without the delays of conventional pathology workflows. The technology bridges a critical gap in current practice by offering immediate, molecular-level feedback during tumor resection, fundamentally changing how surgeons approach the complex balance between aggressive tumor removal and limb preservation. With five-year survival rates reaching 85 percent when clear margins are achieved, the ability to confidently assess margins in real time could substantially improve patient outcomes. By eliminating guesswork and reducing the need for post-operative revision surgeries due to inadequate margins, this platform represents a significant advancement in precision surgical oncology for bone cancer patients.
