New research published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas has identified a striking association between coeliac disease and non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk. The large-scale study, analyzing data from 35,359 coeliac disease patients and matched controls, found that affected individuals face a 2.38-fold increased risk of developing this malignancy compared to the general population.
This substantial elevation in lymphoma risk represents one of the most significant findings from the decade-long investigation conducted by Columbia University and Karolinska Institute researchers. The discovery suggests that enhanced cancer surveillance protocols may be warranted for coeliac disease patients. Combined with the study’s findings of elevated cardiovascular disease risk and overall 39% increased mortality, the results highlight the multifaceted health challenges facing this patient population and underscore the importance of proactive clinical management.
