In a significant departure from traditional multilateral frameworks, the Netherlands and Colombia convened a coalition of willing nations in April 2026 to establish concrete pathways for phasing out fossil fuel dependency. The Santa Maria conference represents a strategic shift in climate diplomacy, circumventing the gridlocked UN COP process where petro states and corporate interests have repeatedly blocked binding commitments. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has consistently affirmed that ending fossil fuel use is essential to prevent catastrophic climate consequences.
