Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine have identified a surprising molecular connection between blood cancer genetics and Alzheimer’s disease, potentially transforming our understanding of neurodegeneration. The groundbreaking study, published in Nature Neuroscience, analyzed genetic data from 2,847 participants and found that mutations associated with clonal hematopoiesis—a precancerous blood condition—were present in 43% of Alzheimer’s patients compared to only 25% of healthy controls.
The research reveals that these blood cancer-linked mutations trigger hyperinflammatory responses in microglia, the brain’s immune cells, accelerating neuronal damage and cognitive decline. This discovery opens remarkable therapeutic possibilities: existing cancer immunotherapy drugs may be repurposed to treat Alzheimer’s disease, while blood-based genetic screening could enable early detection of individuals at risk for neurodegeneration. The findings suggest that targeting inflammation pathways common to both diseases could yield novel prevention and treatment strategies for millions facing dementia risk.
