The UK’s 2024–25 influenza vaccine framework introduces three significant updates with direct implications for clinical practice. First, pharmacists and specialist nurses are now authorised to administer both inactivated and live attenuated vaccines under a single group protocol—expanding vaccine distribution capacity while maintaining professional accountability and clinical oversight.

Second, the updated template establishes standardised contraindication criteria that reduce clinical ambiguity and variation in eligibility assessments. This clarity enables consistent decision-making across settings and minimises unnecessary vaccine deferrals. Third, integration with digital immunisation records creates real-time eligibility verification systems, allowing practitioners to confirm patient suitability immediately and streamline administrative workflows.

These advances collectively reduce prescribing barriers, enhance vaccine accessibility for target populations, and support workforce efficiency. Healthcare professionals should familiarise themselves with updated eligibility criteria and documentation requirements to maximise the framework’s benefits. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
