A comprehensive analysis of 500,000 UK adults reveals that biological aging is slowest when sleep duration falls between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night, according to research published in Nature. Scientists measured aging across nine organ systems using 23 distinct biological aging clocks, confirming that sleep duration sits at the center of healthy aging trajectories. Outside this optimal window, aging acceleration intensifies in both directions—sleeping five hours per night or sleeping ten hours per night both show significantly faster aging patterns. The finding emerged from a large observational cohort analysis combined with Mendelian randomization methods, strengthening causal inference. These data provide clinicians and patients with evidence-based targets for sleep duration while underscoring that biological age and chronological age diverge significantly based on sleep patterns.
