A new crossover study challenges the assumption that music makes exercise feel easier by reducing physiological stress. Researchers found that cyclists exercising at 80% peak power output completed 20% longer sessions with self-selected music compared to silence—yet their bodies reached identical exhaustion endpoints. Heart rate, blood lactate concentration, and perceived effort were the same at the point of fatigue in both conditions.

This paradox suggests music functions as a psychological tool rather than a metabolic shortcut. By extending tolerance to the same level of physiological burden, music appears to delay the decision to stop rather than diminish the actual work demand. The finding has important implications for athletes and coaches: music is a legitimate motivational aid, but it does not reduce the physiological cost of training, warranting careful monitoring to prevent overtraining.
