Heavy Coffee Consumption Associated With 50% Lower Liver Cancer Risk in Prospective Analysis

A meta-analysis spanning 20 prospective cohort studies has quantified striking associations between coffee consumption and cancer prevention. Heavy coffee drinkers exhibited approximately 50% lower liver cancer incidence compared to non-drinkers, with a linear dose-response relationship observed across studies. Beyond hepatic malignancy, the protective signal extends to colorectal cancer outcomes: Stage III colorectal cancer patients who consumed coffee showed 43% improved survival rates, while overall colorectal cancer survival improved by 22%. These substantial risk reductions persisted across heterogeneous populations and remained significant in analyses of decaffeinated coffee, reinforcing evidence that coffee’s bioactive compounds—rather than caffeine—mediate the protective effect. The consistency of findings across 1.5 million women and thousands of cancer patients strengthens confidence in these associations.
