Quantitative analysis reveals a striking disconnect between short-term and long-term protein metabolism. Animal protein consumption triggers a 47% higher acute muscle protein synthesis rate following a single meal compared to plant-based alternatives. However, when researchers extended measurement windows from hours to days, the advantage disappeared entirely. Daily muscle protein synthesis rates showed only negligible differences: 1.29% for omnivorous diets versus 1.23% for plant-based diets. Most tellingly, over 10 weeks of controlled dietary intervention, both groups achieved identical muscle growth of 8.3% when daily protein intake was equivalent. These data underscore a fundamental principle in nutritional science: cumulative daily intake substantially outweighs acute post-meal metabolic responses in determining physiological outcomes.
