A 2020 systematic review in Nutrients documents vitamin D deficiency as a significant risk factor across rickets, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and increased infection susceptibility. The comprehensive analysis by Charoenngam and Holick from Boston University School of Medicine reveals how suboptimal vitamin D status impairs immune regulation, creating vulnerability to both infectious and autoimmune conditions.
