Light Smoking Poses Serious Cardiovascular Threat, Large Pooled Analysis Confirms

A comprehensive analysis of 22 prospective cohort studies published in PLOS Medicine has delivered stark evidence that smoking as few as 2 to 5 cigarettes per day substantially increases cardiovascular risk. The study, which tracked over 302,500 adults and documented more than 125,000 deaths and 54,000 cardiovascular events, found that light smoking elevates heart failure risk by approximately 50% and all-cause mortality by 60%.

Perhaps more concerning is the finding that quitting smoking does not fully reverse these risks. Former smokers retain elevated cardiovascular vulnerability for 20 to 30 years after cessation, never entirely returning to the baseline risk profile of never-smokers. The research demonstrates that no safe smoking threshold exists, and gradual reduction without complete cessation proves ineffective at lowering cardiovascular risk.

These findings reinforce the critical importance of complete smoking cessation as the only meaningful strategy for cardiovascular protection.
