Adolescent obesity continues rising across most regions worldwide, with digital food marketing and structural barriers identified as primary drivers rather than individual choices. A narrative review published in The Lancet Digital Health found that while obesity rates accelerate, most digital prevention tools remain inadequate—they are weight-centric, poorly integrated into adolescents’ daily lives, and disconnected from food systems realities.

The research highlights five critical design gaps: narrow weight focus, poor real-world integration, limited food systems perspective, lack of socioeconomic tailoring, and missing adolescent co-design. These barriers underscore why traditional app-based interventions have failed to reverse the trend.

Effective prevention requires addressing commercial determinants of health and structural inequities alongside thoughtful digital innovation.
