Dopamine drives motivation, goal-directed behavior, and reward processing—its dysregulation produces apathy and anhedonia. Serotonin stabilizes mood and regulates sleep-wake cycles; imbalance causes depression and insomnia. Acetylcholine enables memory consolidation and sustained attention; loss impairs learning and cognitive speed. Norepinephrine controls alertness and stress responsiveness; dysfunction produces fatigue or hyperarousal. GABA provides neuronal inhibition and anxiety regulation; deficiency increases anxiety and sleep disturbance. Glutamate drives excitatory signaling for learning, but excessive glutamate becomes neurotoxic and damages cognition. This framework explains why depression often responds to serotonin-boosting medications, why dopamine agonists restore motivation in Parkinson’s disease, and why cognitive decline can reflect acetylcholine insufficiency.
