Second, during cognitive tasks, the same compound paradoxically decreases alpha activity, contradicting the relaxation narrative central to most supplement promotion. Third, and perhaps most concerning, the four proposed biological mechanisms explaining L-theanine’s effects have never been independently confirmed in human studies. The most cited mechanism derives from a solitary 2002 in vitro experiment that remains unreplicated.
