The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has officially become the third largest in recorded history, with case counts exceeding 2,100. This places the ongoing crisis behind only the 2014-2016 West African epidemic (28,616 cases) and the 2018-2020 DR Congo outbreak (3,481 cases).
The rapid accumulation of cases is directly linked to the virus’s expansion into conflict-affected territories where government health response capacity is severely limited. Every health facility contacted across the affected region reports operating at full capacity, indicating an acute shortage of resources for isolation, treatment, and contact tracing activities. The spread into rebel-controlled areas has further strained response capabilities, as traditional epidemiological containment protocols become increasingly difficult to implement in zones inaccessible to government authorities and international health workers.
