Epidemiological mapping across Nigeria is shedding light on a devastating yet largely invisible public health crisis: noma, a rapidly progressive oral infection that claims 80–90% of untreated cases among children living in extreme poverty. Despite decades of documented cases, noma only gained formal recognition as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization in 2023—a critical gap that has left surveillance systems inadequate and prevention infrastructure absent in endemic regions. The new mapping initiative aims to change this trajectory by providing comprehensive data to guide targeted interventions. Experts emphasize that early recognition combined with basic oral hygiene measures can prevent progression, yet vulnerable populations remain without access to these fundamental preventive strategies. This research underscores the urgency of translating WHO recognition into concrete public health action across Nigeria.
