A phase 3 clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine has demonstrated promising results for bepirovirsen, an antisense oligonucleotide therapy designed to treat chronic hepatitis B infection. Unlike conventional treatments that primarily suppress viral replication, bepirovirsen targets hepatitis B virus RNA through a novel mechanism aimed at reducing surface antigen production—a critical step toward functional cure.
The trial enrolled patients with chronic hepatitis B and evaluated primary endpoints including sustained hepatitis B surface antigen loss and undetectable HBV DNA levels post-treatment. These outcomes align with World Health Organization definitions of functional cure, addressing a significant unmet medical need for the 296 million people living with chronic hepatitis B worldwide. This advancement represents a meaningful shift in the treatment landscape, potentially transforming outcomes beyond current therapeutic approaches.
