Nevada’s statewide medical meal delivery program has emerged as a promising model for reducing healthcare expenditures among vulnerable populations. The Nevada Medical Nutrition Therapy Program, developed in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provided medically tailored meals to over 3,400 Medicaid beneficiaries with chronic conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.

Results from the 12-month evaluation reveal a remarkable 11% reduction in overall healthcare costs, alongside a 23% decrease in emergency department visits and a 15% reduction in hospital readmissions. The program’s documented 1.3:1 return on investment has garnered significant attention from 12 additional states exploring similar interventions. These findings underscore the potential for nutrition-focused clinical interventions to address both health outcomes and fiscal sustainability in Medicaid populations.
