Exercise scientists have long treated resistance and endurance training as separate disciplines with distinct physiological demands. However, emerging evidence reveals that both modalities operate along a shared continuum of intensity, characterized by overlapping zones that serve different adaptive purposes.

A unified framework now integrates objective physiological markers—heart rate, lactate accumulation, and performance metrics—with subjective effort perception scales. Low-intensity sessions at 30–50% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) build aerobic capacity and facilitate recovery, while high-intensity efforts at 80–90% 1RM drive strength and power adaptations. This integrated approach enables athletes and clinicians to monitor training load more effectively, moving beyond traditional laboratory testing toward field-based assessment strategies.

The framework demonstrates that perceived exertion correlates reliably with physiological stress across both training types, allowing practitioners to optimize programming based on measurable and subjective data combined.
