A new peer-reviewed study challenges a fundamental assumption in sports nutrition practice: that consuming a high-carbohydrate breakfast enhances glycogen availability in endurance athletes. Researchers administered 3 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight to 16 well-trained male cyclists and measured liver and muscle glycogen stores using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and tissue biopsy. Contrary to conventional wisdom, neither liver nor muscle glycogen increased over the 3-hour observation period. The findings suggest that well-trained athletes who maintain consistent training regimens and adequate daily carbohydrate intake already operate at physiological storage capacity. This discovery has important implications for pre-competition nutrition strategies, suggesting that acute carbohydrate loading may prove ineffective once athletes have maximized their tissue glycogen through regular training and sustained dietary practices.
