A significant preclinical finding reveals that omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil reduced pancreatic cancer development by 50% compared to oleic acid in genetically predisposed mice. Among high-risk mice, those supplemented with omega-3s showed only 35% tumor development rates versus 85% in mice fed oleic acid-enriched diets.

This stark contrast suggests dietary fat composition plays a crucial mechanistic role in pancreatic cancer progression, particularly for individuals carrying hereditary cancer susceptibility genes. The study utilized genetically modified mouse models designed to mirror human hereditary pancreatic cancer risk patterns.

For the estimated millions worldwide at heightened pancreatic cancer risk, these findings underscore the potential importance of omega-3 incorporation into cancer prevention strategies.
