New research challenges the traditional focus on neurons as the primary drivers of brain health, revealing that four cell types working in concert determine cognitive resilience. According to findings in Science Translational Medicine, astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes, and neurons must communicate effectively to maintain neurological health—and this cellular dialogue, rather than genetic predisposition alone, shapes whether the brain becomes vulnerable to neuroinflammation.

Astrocytes function as central regulators, making critical decisions about inflammatory signals. Microglia act as immune cells capable of shifting between protective and damaging states based on cues from astrocytes. Oligodendrocytes provide essential metabolic support that neurons depend on during stress and injury. Understanding this four-cell hierarchy opens new therapeutic avenues for preventing cognitive decline and building mental resilience across the lifespan.
