New research presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting reveals that GLP-1 receptor agonists—medications commonly used for weight loss and diabetes management—may offer unexpected cancer protection. The landmark analysis examined 2.3 million patient records and found that women using these medications experienced a 17% reduction in breast cancer incidence compared to those receiving standard care. Even more notably, cancer mortality among women who developed breast cancer declined by 24%. The protective effects proved strongest in postmenopausal women with severe obesity. Led by Dr. Jennifer Martinez at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the study analyzed electronic health records from 2018 to 2024, providing the most comprehensive real-world evidence to date of potential anti-cancer properties beyond these drugs’ established metabolic benefits.
