Your gastrointestinal system operates as a sophisticated nutrient extraction apparatus, with each of its seven meters serving a distinct biochemical function. The duodenum specializes in mineral and fat-soluble vitamin absorption, while the jejunum extracts macronutrients with remarkable efficiency. The ileum recovers B vitamins and specialized compounds, and the colon recovers water while synthesizing microbial metabolites. This compartmentalization is not random—each segment’s anatomical structure precisely matches its nutrient-handling role. The small intestine alone contains approximately 250 square meters of villous surface area when accounting for microvilli, creating an optimal microenvironment for molecular transport. Understanding this intricate system reveals why digestive health directly impacts overall nutritional status and metabolic function.
