New Research Reveals Native Hawaiian Health Disparity in Physical Mobility

Native Hawaiian adults are experiencing significant mobility limitations—affecting gait, balance, and agility—at substantially higher rates and younger ages compared to other racial and ethnic groups in Hawaiʻi, according to new research from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Hā Kūpuna National Resource Center for Native Hawaiian Elders.

The study documents elevated fall risk and functional decline among Native Hawaiian populations, underscoring a critical health equity concern that demands immediate clinical and public health intervention. These findings align with longstanding disparities in chronic disease prevalence within Native Hawaiian communities, including high rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease—all known contributors to premature functional decline.
