Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has completed the pilot phase of a groundbreaking digital monitoring system designed to track food fortification compliance across the country’s retail and market channels. The 2026 Large Scale Food Fortification (LSFF) initiative represents a significant departure from ad-hoc compliance inspections toward systematic, real-time data collection at the point of sale. Following validation and dissemination events in Lagos in June 2026, state authorities are now receiving pilot findings to support coordinated policy enforcement. This structural shift acknowledges the persistent burden of micronutrient deficiencies—including anaemia, vitamin A deficiency, and iodine insufficiency—across sub-Saharan Africa. By leveraging digital infrastructure to capture product specifications, labelling accuracy, and distribution patterns, NAFDAC aims to ensure that fortified foods reach consumers with consistent micronutrient content and proper identification across Nigeria’s distributed food supply chain.
