New data from a comprehensive screening initiative in Moldova reveals alarming addiction prevalence within the probation system. Among 900 individuals entering probation centres, 15.1% screened positive for opioid use disorder, translating to 136 individuals with undiagnosed or untreated addiction in a single country’s justice system.

The screening programme also uncovered significant comorbidity concerns: 22.7% of those screened positive for opioid disorder tested positive for HIV, including 7 newly diagnosed cases. Researchers found that brief educational interventions about treatment options significantly increased participant interest in medications for opioid use disorder. Most striking was the treatment retention rate—97% of participants who initiated medication-assisted therapy remained engaged in care.

These statistics underscore both the scale of untreated addiction in justice settings and the effectiveness of targeted intervention strategies when properly implemented. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
