Despite this widespread quality problem, human safety data remain limited. While preclinical models demonstrate potential harm at extreme oxidation levels, real-world evidence in humans is sparse. A single 2012 randomized controlled trial found no adverse effects from heavily oxidized fish oil in healthy adults over seven weeks, but long-term safety studies are absent.
The European Food Safety Authority acknowledges that current evidence does not establish clear health-based safety thresholds for oxidized fish oil.
