A transformative integrated PET imaging platform presented at the 2026 Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Annual Meeting is poised to revolutionize how surgeons approach osteosarcoma resection. The technology enables unprecedented real-time visualization of tumor boundaries during surgery, eliminating the delays inherent in traditional frozen section analysis and visual inspection methods. By providing immediate molecular-level distinction between malignant and healthy tissue at the point of care, surgeons can now make informed decisions about surgical margins while the patient remains on the operating table. This capability addresses a longstanding surgical dilemma: achieving complete tumor removal while maximizing limb preservation. Early research demonstrates the platform’s ability to rapidly process imaging data and deliver clear, actionable guidance to surgical teams, potentially reducing local recurrence rates and improving long-term patient outcomes in this aggressive bone cancer.
