The segmental architecture of nutrient absorption has critical diagnostic implications for clinicians managing gastrointestinal disease. Damage to the ileum produces selective vitamin B12 deficiency and impaired bile salt recycling, potentially leading to fat malabsorption. Jejunal injury—affecting the macronutrient absorption powerhouse—creates more catastrophic nutritional failure, compromising protein synthesis, lipid metabolism, and micronutrient uptake simultaneously. Duodenal pathology specifically threatens mineral and fat-soluble vitamin absorption, manifesting as anemia, bone disease, and clotting disorders. Even focal gastric lesions can disrupt early-stage protein digestion and water-soluble molecule capture. This knowledge transforms clinical assessment: identifying the anatomical site of gastrointestinal dysfunction enables clinicians to predict specific deficiency patterns, tailor supplementation strategies, and guide patients toward targeted dietary modifications.
