When your local health department or the FDA’s Food Safety Alerts identify a contaminated product—such as a specific brand of lettuce or cilantro from a particular farm—consumers should avoid that specific product entirely.

Frozen vegetables are a safe alternative; cyclospora oocysts do not survive the freezing process. Canned vegetables are equally safe. These options retain most nutritional value while eliminating infection risk. Organic and conventionally grown produce carry equivalent risk profiles during cyclospora outbreaks—the contamination source is water exposure, not agricultural practice.
