Simple Grip Test Surpasses Blood Pressure in Predicting Mortality Risk

A landmark prospective study challenges conventional wisdom about mortality risk assessment. Researchers analyzing data from 139,691 adults across 17 countries found that handgrip strength—measured in a simple 30-second squeeze test—is a more powerful predictor of death risk than systolic blood pressure, long considered the gold standard in preventive medicine.

The findings from the PURE Study reveal that every 5-kilogram decline in grip strength correlates with a 16% increase in all-cause mortality. This relationship persisted across cardiovascular deaths, heart attacks, and strokes, even after adjusting for age, smoking, physical activity, and other major confounders. Because grip strength serves as a proxy for whole-body muscle mass and metabolic health, researchers suggest it offers clinicians a reliable, cost-effective screening tool that complements traditional risk assessments.
