A major observational study has quantified a striking association: men with elevated tyrosine levels experienced approximately one year reduction in life expectancy compared to counterparts with lower levels. This finding directly challenges the dominant narrative surrounding tyrosine’s cognitive enhancement benefits, which drive a substantial market for nootropic and performance supplements.

The amino acid, which supports neurotransmitter synthesis and is widely promoted for attention and focus, shows an unexpected mortality signal that contradicts its reputation as a universally beneficial supplement. The magnitude of the effect—approaching a full year of life expectancy loss—underscores the importance of post-market surveillance for widely used supplements. Researchers stress that while this observational data does not prove causation, the association warrants urgent further investigation and heightened scrutiny of long-term amino acid supplementation practices.
