Between 2011 and 2019, early-stage adenocarcinoma diagnoses among never-smoking women increased dramatically by 68%, while late-stage disease remained relatively flat at 12% growth. Most significantly, this detection surge correlated with a 15% decline in lung cancer mortality across the population studied.
The increase in early diagnoses coincided with expanding access to self-initiated low-dose computed tomography screening through Taiwan’s private healthcare sector. This opportunistic screening approach—distinct from centralized national programs—engaged over 200,000 documented lung cancer cases in the registry analysis. The data suggests that patient-initiated screening, when readily accessible, can effectively shift disease stage at diagnosis toward more treatable presentations, ultimately improving survival rates.
