Exercise science identifies three distinct physiological zones along a stress-response spectrum, according to the 2026 ISSN Position Stand on Antioxidants. Sedentary behavior—characterized by minimal biological stress—results in metabolic stagnation with no adaptive signal. Moderate training occupies the optimal zone where repeatable, recoverable stress triggers peak adaptation. Overtraining, the third zone, generates stress beyond the body’s buffering capacity, causing maladaptation and performance decline.

This three-phase model clarifies why both sedentary and overtrained individuals plateau, while those applying consistent, moderate stress experience continuous improvement. The hormesis curve demonstrates that physiological adaptation follows a U-shaped dose-response pattern: insufficient stimulus yields no gain, optimal stimulus yields adaptation, and excessive stimulus yields deterioration.

Understanding these zones enables healthcare providers to counsel patients on sustainable exercise programming that maximizes gains while minimizing injury risk and burnout.
