For clinicians and patients seeking evidence-based approaches to stress and cognitive performance, L-theanine offers three distinct therapeutic mechanisms. First, it actively shifts brain wave patterns from stress-dominant beta frequencies toward alpha patterns associated with relaxed focus—a neural rebalancing absent in sedative approaches. Second, it simultaneously enhances three key neurotransmitter systems: GABA and serotonin increase calm regulation, while reduced glutamate excitability prevents mental overactivity.

Third, L-theanine demonstrates synergistic potential with caffeine. Rather than inducing jitteriness, the combination sharpens focus and reaction time while maintaining composure. Alternatively, L-theanine alone may support pre-sleep transitions by reducing neural hyperactivity without creating drowsiness.
