The XPRIZE Healthspan competition has launched the world’s largest coordinated longevity research initiative, committing $101 million to drive breakthrough interventions in age-related decline. Led by scientific director Dr. Jamie Justice of Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the competition brings together research teams from major institutions worldwide to develop measurable solutions for restoring youthful function in older adults.
The competition structure strategically allocates prizes across three critical domains: cognitive function, muscle strength, and immune system restoration. Each category receives $20 million in dedicated funding, with additional milestone and audacious goal prizes supporting incremental and transformative breakthroughs through 2030.
Dr. Justice emphasized that the most promising approaches combine multiple research modalities—from cellular reprogramming to metabolic interventions—rather than relying on single-intervention strategies. She also cautioned against unproven anti-aging treatments circulating outside the peer-reviewed research framework.
