Dog vaccination is the solution
Vaccinating 70% of the dog population in an area eliminates canine rabies — preventing the vast majority of human exposures. Dog vaccination is more cost-effective than providing human PEP and is the only pathway to sustained elimination.
PEP saves lives
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) — washing the wound, then rabies vaccine plus rabies immunoglobulin — is nearly 100% effective when started promptly after a bite. Access to PEP remains inadequate in many LMICs.
Neglected poor
Rabies disproportionately affects rural populations in Africa and Asia — the communities least likely to access PEP. 95% of human deaths occur in these two regions. PEP costs can be catastrophic for poor families.

Glossary of key terms

Rabies virus
WHO
A neurotropic RNA virus of the Lyssavirus genus. Transmitted through saliva of infected mammals — predominantly dogs (99% of human cases). The virus travels along peripheral nerves to the brain, causing fatal encephalitis.
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
WHO
Immediate wound washing + rabies vaccine + rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) administered promptly after a bite. Nearly 100% effective when started before symptom onset. WHO recommends PEP for all category III exposures regardless of the animal's vaccination status.
Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG)
WHO
Concentrated antibodies against rabies virus — given with the first vaccine dose to provide immediate passive immunity while the vaccine-induced immune response develops. Human RIG (HRIG) or equine RIG (ERIG) are available. RIG access is a major equity gap.
Zero by 30

Mass dog vaccination

Intradermal PEP

Administering rabies vaccine intradermally (ID) instead of intramuscularly (IM) — using one-fifth to one-third of the IM dose per site, reducing vaccine cost by 60-80%. WHO-recommended for resource-limited settings. Clinically equivalent efficacy.
