A new analysis of large patient databases from the University of Florida demonstrates that individuals taking glucosamine supplements show a significantly higher likelihood of progressing from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease compared to non-users. This finding emerged from examination of patient records combined with advanced neuroimaging studies, providing multiple lines of evidence for the association.

The research team’s multi-modal approach strengthened the reliability of their conclusions by cross-referencing clinical progression data with structural brain imaging findings. The discovery is particularly relevant given the widespread use of glucosamine among aging populations seeking joint pain relief. These data-driven results underscore the importance of ongoing pharmacovigilance for over-the-counter supplements, especially those commonly used by older adults who may be at increased dementia risk.
