The International Organization for Migration has unveiled a comprehensive framework to tackle the unprecedented global displacement crisis, which now affects over 120 million people worldwide—approximately 1 in 69 individuals globally. The new approach prioritizes health system integration as a cornerstone strategy, recognizing displacement as a critical public health emergency.

Research published in The Lancet Global Health reveals that displaced populations experience mortality rates 2-3 times higher than host communities, primarily due to limited healthcare access and increased communicable disease vulnerability. The framework addresses significant gaps in migration and health policy, with particular emphasis on internally displaced persons who often lack international protection mechanisms. Director General António Vitorino stressed the importance of sustainable solutions during the IOM Council session in November 2023, signaling a commitment to moving beyond emergency response toward long-term health security integration for vulnerable populations.
