Rabies remains one of medicine’s most lethal infectious diseases: once clinical symptoms appear, the case fatality rate approaches 100 percent. This sobering reality makes rapid post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) the critical intervention window—and timely risk assessment essential to survival.

The UK Department of Health and Social Care’s newly released post-exposure risk assessment form directly addresses this urgency by providing clinicians with a structured, evidence-based pathway to classify exposure incidents and initiate prophylaxis without delay. The tool systematically evaluates animal type, geographic origin, and exposure characteristics to determine whether immediate or expedited treatment is warranted.

By standardising risk evaluation across NHS settings, the framework eliminates assessment variability that could otherwise delay life-saving prophylaxis.
