Magnesium participates in hundreds of enzymatic reactions throughout the human body—a scope far exceeding conventional understanding of mineral nutrition. From ATP generation that fuels cellular energy to muscle contraction and neurological function, magnesium operates as a central cofactor in interconnected metabolic pathways rather than producing independent effects.

This finding reshapes how clinicians and nutritionists should conceptualize mineral supplementation. The Georgian Medical Journal’s analysis reveals that magnesium’s effects cannot be isolated or treated separately; instead, they represent one integrated metabolic system where deficiency cascades through multiple biological processes. When magnesium levels decline, ATP production suffers, muscle function deteriorates, and neurological signaling becomes compromised—not as three separate problems, but as expressions of a single systemic dysfunction.

This biochemical reality underscores why whole-food sources of magnesium, combined with complementary nutrients, may offer therapeutic advantages over isolated supplementation.
