Second, neurotrophic cascades triggered by resistance training enable neural repair processes and directly reduce amyloid and tau accumulation—pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. Third, systemic health improvements—including enhanced muscle function, reduced inflammation, and improved metabolic regulation—predict greater cognitive reserve and resistance to dementia progression.
These findings have practical implications for clinical practice and population health. Rather than viewing brain protection as requiring specialized cognitive interventions alone, evidence supports incorporating structured resistance training into standard dementia prevention and healthy ageing programmes. The multi-system benefits suggest that accessible, adherence-friendly strength exercise protocols may offer clinically meaningful cognitive protection across adult populations.
