A landmark 14-year study of over 47,000 HIV-positive patients across China has exposed significant challenges in integrated sexual health management. The research, published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific, found that nearly 40% of participants experienced recurrent sexually transmitted infections during the study period.
Led by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this comprehensive multicenter analysis tracked infection patterns from 2010 to 2024 across 15 provinces. Researchers employed systematic STI screening protocols at HIV care entry and routine follow-up visits, revealing that structured screening approaches detected 23% more infections compared to symptom-based testing alone.
The findings underscore the necessity for strengthened integrated care models that address both HIV and STI management simultaneously. Experts emphasize that enhanced surveillance and prevention strategies are essential to reduce the burden of co-infections in this vulnerable population.
