A striking consensus emerged from the Third International Conference for PEN-Plus in Africa, with 100 percent of ICPPA 2026 participants committing to elevate severe and chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) as an urgent health and development priority. This universal agreement represents a watershed moment in continental health policy, reflecting shared recognition that NCDs are a critical barrier to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
Beyond this foundational commitment, conference participants demonstrated strong support for advancing integrated early detection and treatment protocols (95 percent) and promoting people-centered, multisectoral care approaches (90 percent). Notably, 88 percent of participants prioritized reducing premature NCD mortality, while 75 percent committed to increased investment specifically targeting vulnerable populations. These data-driven pledges underscore Africa’s determination to address the growing NCD epidemic while ensuring equitable health outcomes across all socioeconomic strata.
