WHO Declares Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak in DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared an epidemic of Ebola virus disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The determination, made on May 17, 2026, reflects the severity and potential for rapid international spread of this outbreak.

The Bundibugyo virus is one of six known Ebola virus species and has historically shown lower fatality rates than some other strains, though it remains highly pathogenic. Health authorities are mobilizing resources across affected regions to contain transmission and provide medical care to confirmed cases and contacts.

The WHO and partner organizations are coordinating response efforts including case detection, contact tracing, laboratory confirmation, and infection prevention measures. Healthcare workers and border authorities in neighboring countries have been notified to enhance surveillance protocols. This is a developing story.
