UK Health Security Agency surveillance data reveals a striking epidemiological anomaly: genital herpes diagnoses are increasing in England even as most other sexually transmitted infections show declining trends. This counterintuitive finding highlights the unique transmission dynamics and persistence of herpes simplex virus infections.

The rise in herpes cases may partly reflect advances in diagnostic testing capabilities and increased case-seeking behaviour among populations with greater health awareness. However, experts caution that the data underscore persistent transmission patterns and the chronic nature of HSV infection, which can remain dormant and asymptomatic while remaining transmissible.

Public health officials stress that regular testing, early detection, and prevention counselling remain essential strategies for managing herpes burden across populations. The findings warrant continued surveillance and investigation into factors driving herpes transmission despite broader STI control successes.
