A comprehensive meta-analysis of 11 randomised controlled trials has upended conventional exercise wisdom by demonstrating that brief, intense activity bursts—totalling just 11 minutes daily—produce measurable improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition. The analysis of 472 healthy to sub-healthy adults found that participants engaging in 1–2 minute vigorous exercise sessions scattered throughout the day achieved a 10% increase in peak power output and a 7% improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness, alongside a 3 percentage point reduction in body fat. Notably, these gains occurred without significant changes in total body weight or BMI, suggesting that exercise intensity and distribution matter more than duration continuity. The research, published in the Journal of Nutrition and Health Aging (2026), challenges the prevailing narrative that fitness requires sustained, continuous exercise blocks.
