Magnesium deficiency affects nearly half the US population and is linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. The relationship is bidirectional—deficiency causes disease, but disease also depletes magnesium. Clinicians should assess and correct magnesium status in patients with chronic conditions.
